Guided tours of the Giza pyramids

Most Giza tours collect you from a hotel in Cairo or Giza and spend two and a half to eight hours at the pyramids and the Sphinx. They differ in the start time, the camel ride and whether a ticket for the inside of the Great Pyramid is part of the deal.

The Giza plateau lies on the western edge of the city, about 15 kilometres from the Tahrir area by road. Without traffic that is an 18-minute drive, though Cairo rarely offers one, so the time quoted on a tour usually includes a good share of driving. Nearly every guided visit starts with a car or minibus at your hotel in Cairo or Giza. The exception is a three-hour walking tour whose guide waits for you at the ticketing area, which suits anyone staying within sight of the pyramids.

What you see is much the same on every tour: the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, the Valley Temple and the Great Sphinx below it. Several tours also stop at a viewpoint for the classic photo of all the pyramids in a line. The differences lie elsewhere: how long you stay, the camel ride, the start time, and whether a ticket for the inside of a pyramid is included.

Half day, full day or a short private visit

The shortest private tour lasts two and a half hours and still fits in a camel ride in the desert by the plateau, with the entrance fees included. A typical half day takes four hours: one private tour leaves hotels in Cairo or Giza at 8am, and the Saladino half day can be booked as a small group or privately, with a panoramic viewpoint and the plateau ticket included. Its four hours count the transfers too.

The half-day tour of the pyramids and the Sphinx from Cairo is listed at four to five hours. Reviews mention that it can run shorter, one reviewer counted three hours, and that it ends with a visit to a perfume shop. Longer days add something from the city. One eight-hour tour is led by a female Egyptologist and is open to women travelling alone, couples and families; it takes in the pyramids, lunch, either the old Egyptian Museum or the Grand Egyptian Museum depending on the option, and Khan el-Khalili. It is not suitable for wheelchair users.

Going inside the Great Pyramid

A standard plateau ticket covers the grounds, not the interiors. The official ticket portal sells the interiors as extras: 1,500 EGP for the Great Pyramid and 280 EGP for the Pyramid of Khafre for foreign adults, with half price for students, as of November 2026. Buy them with your plateau ticket or choose a tour that sorts them out. The private four-hour Khufu tour is the one that includes this ticket as standard, together with a guide, water and a private car. On most others the Khufu interior is an add-on, and the felucca tour states that entry inside the Khafre pyramid is not included.

Two points before you plan around it. One reviewer of a private tour reported that there was no queue jump for the interior: they lined up for tickets with everyone else. And the ministry has closed the Great Pyramid for maintenance before; in May 2023 it was closed and due to reopen within a month, while Khafre and Menkaure stayed open. Treat the inside visit as likely, not certain. Our page on the Great Pyramid covers the chambers in more detail.

Early starts and the sunrise ride

The official portal gives 7am as opening time, with last entry at 4pm. Sunrise at Giza comes earlier: 06:09 on 1 November and 06:47 on 21 December. The sunrise tour handles this by picking you up at 5am for a one-hour camel or horse ride from a stable near the pyramids, outside the plateau. Breakfast follows, then a two-hour guided walk round the pyramids once the gates are open. Its 8am version reverses the order, with the ride inside the complex and breakfast at the end. The tour lasts five hours, and the interior of the Great Pyramid is not included.

Reviews of the early start praise the near-empty plateau at opening time. The criticism is specific: the sunrise photo spot sits a long way from the pyramids and is reached across rough ground, and one guest found it was not the private tour they had expected. A parent wrote that a four-year-old was tired out after the camels. For families with small children, the 8am option at least spares them the 5am pickup.

Camels, carriages and the panorama

A camel ride turns up in many tours, but the length varies a lot. One tour lists a 15-minute ride, the sunrise tour a full hour, and reviewers of the private half day with a camel ride counted well under ten minutes. Ask before you book how long you will actually ride. A five-hour half day lets you cross the plateau by camel or by horse carriage instead of on foot; the plateau ticket is not included, a child rides a camel only with an adult, and each carriage takes two adults and one child or one adult and two children. It is not suitable during pregnancy.

Reviews of rides at the pyramids also describe animals being treated roughly. Our page on camel and quad rides sets out what the plateau operator and an animal rights group say about the rides, and which tours skip them.

Shop stops and what to agree first

The most common complaint in the reviews of Giza tours is not the guide. It is the time spent in papyrus, perfume and alabaster shops that were not in the programme, sometimes at the cost of the promised viewpoint. Some guests enjoy the demonstrations, others feel steered towards a sale. Tell the operator when you book that you want no shopping stops, and say it again when the guide meets you.

The walking tour and the Saladino half day note that tickets bought on site must be paid by card, as cash is not accepted at the gates. The walking tour asks you to bring your passport or ID card, and a copy is accepted. For the rest of the small print, from student tickets to the Ramadan hours, see tickets and opening hours.

The new entrance and the plateau buses

Since April 2025 the main entrance has been a new gate on the Cairo-Fayoum road, south of the pyramids. The old entrance by the Mena House was closed, and a car park with space for more than 1,200 cars and 200 coaches now serves the plateau. Private cars are no longer allowed on the site; electric buses run a hop-on, hop-off service to seven stops instead. When the scheme started, visitors complained of waits in the heat and too few buses. In October 2026 one reviewer found the main gate closed without notice and had to use the entrance by the Sphinx, 2.8 kilometres away.

Heat and the time of year

Tours run all year. In Cairo the average daily high stays between 19 and 25 °C from November to March and climbs to 32 to 35 °C from May to September, with almost no rain. On a summer visit, start early and keep the middle of the day for the car or a museum. Winter days are short: the sun sets at 17:00 on 21 December, an hour after last entry. During Ramadan the plateau opens at 8am and last entry is at 3.30pm. Our page on the best time to visit goes month by month.

What travellers say about the private Giza tour with a camel ride

4.9 (8,106 reviews) · Reviews from GetYourGuide, shortened, names abbreviated

★★★★★ Violeta (Austria) · October 2026

I booked a private tour to the pyramids with a pickup from the airport. My guide Hussein was perfect! … Once at the pyramids I was happy I booked an afternoon (12:45pm) tour, since there were significantly less people and I could enjoy the view and the tour.

★★★★★ Justyna (Switzerland) · October 2026

We spent a fantastic day exploring Cairo with Muhammed! From admiring the pyramids to tasting spices, discovering fragrant oils and appreciating beautiful alabaster vases, it was a wonderful experience.

★★★★★ Joseph (United States) · October 2026

Mohamed was an excellent guide. Very knowledgeable on the history of the pyramids

★★★★★ Aimee (United Kingdom) · October 2026

Pickup was on time and in a good quality vehicle with working seatbelts. There was no ‘skip the queue’ - we had to queue to buy tickets to go inside a pyramid with everyone else … At the end, we were unexpectedly taken to a papyrus ‘factory’ which was a little demo then a rip-off shop.

★★★★★ Paula (Spain) · May 2024

Our tour guide arrived on time, but unfortunately, their focus seemed more on steering us towards shopping spots rather than providing a comprehensive experience. … they omitted historical context and skipped the promised 'panoramic view.'

Guides get most of the praise here. The recurring complaint is a stop at a papyrus, perfume or alabaster shop that eats into time at the plateau, so tell the operator before booking that you do not want shop visits.

Questions travellers ask

Do Giza tours include the entrance ticket?

It depends on the tour and the option you pick. Some list the plateau ticket as included, others only in certain options, and the camel or carriage tour leaves it out. Check the inclusions on the tour page before you book.

Can I go inside the Great Pyramid on a tour?

Yes, but it needs a separate interior ticket. One tour includes it as standard; on most others it is an add-on or you buy it on site. The ministry has closed the pyramid for maintenance before, so the interior visit is never certain.

How early can I get to the pyramids?

The official portal gives 7am as the opening time. The sunrise tour picks you up at 5am and spends the first hour on a camel or horse ride from a stable outside the plateau, then enters once the gates open.

Will the guide take me to shops?

Many reviews mention stops at papyrus, perfume or alabaster shops. Tell the operator when you book that you do not want shopping stops, and repeat it to the guide on the day.

Can I pay for tickets in cash at the gate?

The walking tour and the Saladino half day state that tickets bought on site must be paid by card and that cash is not accepted at the gates. Carry a card and your passport or a copy.
