Guided tours of the Grand Egyptian Museum

The Grand Egyptian Museum stands about two kilometres from the pyramids, so most guided visits pair the two in one day. Others combine the museum with a felucca on the Nile or the old bazaar, and one private tour stays in the museum only.

The Grand Egyptian Museum opened to the public on 4 November 2025, three days after its opening ceremony. It stands about two kilometres from the pyramids as the crow flies; by road the distance is 5.7 kilometres, a drive of about nine minutes without traffic. That short hop is why most guided visits pair the museum with the plateau. The galleries open at 9am and close at 6pm on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and at 9pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The complex around them opens at 8.30am, and last entry is one hour before the galleries close.

Tickets are sold on the museum's own ticketing site, which describes itself as the only official website for buying them, at tickets.gem.eg. Each ticket is valid for one date and time slot, allows a single entry and cannot be refunded after purchase. On a guided tour the ticket is either included or part of a chosen option, so check the inclusions before you book.

Museum and pyramids in one day

The standard combination runs seven to eight hours. It picks you up at your accommodation in Cairo or Giza, starts at the pyramids with a panoramic view, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple of Khafre, stops for lunch and finishes in the museum. The tickets for the plateau and the GEM are included, the inside of the Great Pyramid is not. Reviewers praise the guides for their knowledge and pace; the criticism concerns the lunch stop, which one guest described as a busy buffet on a dirty street with expensive drinks, and an older bus. Bring a passport or ID card, as the tour asks for one.

The private version with a felucca takes seven hours and adds a felucca ride on the Nile to the pyramids, the museum and lunch. Its guides speak English or French, with Spanish or German at extra cost. Another private tour lets you pick between a 30-minute camel ride, a quad, an hour on a felucca or lunch at a restaurant near Saqqara before the museum; it plans 30 to 45 minutes for the drive to the plateau, arranges details by WhatsApp, and lists a papyrus gallery among its stops.

What a guided route covers

The programmes differ more than the titles suggest. The private tour with the pyramids and the full museum route names the main galleries with their twelve halls, the Tutankhamun galleries and the museum of Khufu's boats. The museum-only private tour lasts four hours and lists the hanging obelisk, the statue of Ramses II, a distant view of the grand staircase, the royal regalia and the grand atrium with the gift shop; the Tutankhamun galleries are not on that list. The museum-only tour and the full-route tour also list a shopping tour in Cairo; say when you book if you would rather skip it.

Time is the limiting factor. On day trips from the Red Sea, reviewers report about two hours in the museum and found it too short. A visitor who went in with a standalone ticket spent about five hours inside and advised a light jacket and comfortable shoes, since the air conditioning makes some rooms cool. If the museum is the main reason for your trip, the museum-only tour or a longer day gives it the hours it needs.

The old town after the museum

The tour with the GEM and Khan el-Khalili leaves the pyramids out. After the museum it drives into the medieval centre for the bazaar and El-Moez Street, with lunch at a local restaurant and water included, in six hours. The tour with a female Egyptologist is planned for women travelling alone, couples and families and takes eight hours: the pyramids, the Sphinx and lunch, then the old Egyptian Museum or the GEM depending on the option, and Khan el-Khalili at the end. It is not suitable for wheelchair users.

If you mix up the museums, the difference matters. A tour that goes to the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square notes that the Tutankhamun collection is no longer on display there, and one reviewer had booked expecting to see it. Our page on the Grand Egyptian Museum describes the building itself.

Two days instead of one

A private two-day tour spreads the sights out. Day one covers the GEM, a felucca, lunch, Old Cairo, the Mohammed Ali Mosque and Khan el-Khalili; day two the pyramids, the Sphinx, Saqqara and Memphis. The guide and the car stay with you both days, a free photo session at the pyramids is part of it, and the operator calls it family-friendly. Accommodation is not included; the guide meets you at your hotel reception. For more on the second day, see Saqqara and Dahshur tours.

Crowds and time slots

In its first weeks the museum counted around 19,000 visitors a day. From mid-November 2025 it moved to tickets for fixed time slots, and from early December 2025 visitors had to buy online before their visit until further notice. Whether that rule still applies today is not confirmed, so on a visit of your own, book ahead on the official site. With a tour, the slot is set by the operator. In November 2025 one reviewer of a ticket bought through a third party reported that it was refused at the entrance and that new tickets had to be bought on the spot, so keep your booking confirmation to hand.

Rules inside the museum

When the museum opened, private photos were permitted, but flash, tripods, selfie sticks, drones and live streaming were not, and food and drink from outside could not be brought in. A standalone museum ticket also lists backpacks and large bags as not allowed. On Wednesday and Saturday evenings the galleries stay open until 9pm, which makes it possible to spend the morning at the pyramids and the late afternoon and evening in the museum.

Travellers on the museum, pyramids and Sphinx day with lunch

4.8 (5,241 reviews) · Reviews from GetYourGuide, shortened, names abbreviated

★★★★★ Khalid (United Kingdom) · November 2026

Douaa was incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and passionate about what she does. She explained everything so clearly, and we learned so much about the pyramids and Egyptian history.

★★★★★ Jane (United Kingdom) · October 2026

Bossi was a fantastic guide! She has incredible knowledge about Ancient Egypt. She put in extra effort to explain everything and was very helpful.

★★★★★ Lars (Germany) · October 2026

… Our guide was informative (popular story telling rather than academic), helpful and set a good pace with balance between guided and own time. Bus pick-up worked well, bus a bit dated … Lunch was OK, but restaurant location pretty disappointing (no Nile, pyramid of park view, but a dirty street and very busy buffet with expensive drinks).

★★★★★ Ermiche (France) · November 2026 Translated

Mr Peter, the guide, was incredibly professional and very kind. Everything listed as included is true. … Note that you do not go inside the pyramid.

Guides and their knowledge draw the main praise. Smaller points in otherwise good reviews are the lunch location and an older bus, and the tour does not go inside a pyramid.

Questions travellers ask

How long do you need in the Grand Egyptian Museum?

Tours that combine it with the pyramids usually leave about two hours, which several reviewers found short. A visitor with a standalone ticket spent around five hours inside. If the museum matters most to you, choose a museum-only tour or a two-day trip.

Are the Tutankhamun galleries included on every tour?

Not on every one. One private tour lists the Tutankhamun galleries and the boats of Khufu among its stops, while the museum-only tour names other highlights and leaves them out of its list. Check the programme before you book.

Can I take photos in the GEM?

Private photos were allowed when the museum opened. Flash, tripods, selfie sticks and drones were not, and food and drink from outside may not be brought in.

Is Tutankhamun still in the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square?

No. A tour that visits the old museum notes that the Tutankhamun collection is no longer shown there. It is in the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Can I visit the GEM in the evening?

Yes, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, when the galleries stay open until 9pm. On the other days they close at 6pm, and last entry is an hour before closing.
