About this guide
Visit Great Pyramids is an independent travel guide to the Giza Plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum and the pyramid fields of Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur. It is written by Patrick Kühne, a travel publisher based in Germany.
Not an official site
This guide is not connected to the Egyptian government, the antiquities authorities, the museum or any tour operator. The sites are run by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities through the Supreme Council of Antiquities, whose website is mota.gov.eg. Tickets for the Giza Plateau, Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur are sold on the ministry's portal Experience Egypt at egymonuments.com. The Grand Egyptian Museum sells its own tickets at tickets.gem.eg, which it describes as the only official website for them. Egypt's national tourism promotion is at egypt.travel.
Opening hours, ticket rules and the new entrance system at Giza have changed several times since 2024. If a closure or a price matters for your plans, check it on those official pages before you set off.
Where the facts come from
Dates, opening hours and ticket rules come from the ministry's pages and its ticket portal, the museum's ticket shop and UNESCO. Climate figures come from the World Meteorological Organization, sunrise and sunset times from the US Naval Observatory, and safety notes from the UK Foreign Office travel advice. For the new visitor gate and the electric buses at Giza we rely on reports in Ahram Online. Where we worked something out ourselves, such as road distances from OpenStreetMap routing, the page says "about" or "roughly". Each page lists its sources, checked in November 2026.
Official sources do not always agree. Older ministry pages and a price list from 2024 give different closing times for Saqqara and a lower price for the inside of the Great Pyramid. In such cases we follow the ticket portal, egymonuments.com, which we read on 2 November 2026. It gives the time of last entry rather than a closing time, so our pages do the same. Entry fees are in Egyptian pounds and marked with the month we checked them. For the Grand Egyptian Museum we give the hours from its ticket shop but no prices, because the shop shows them only during booking.
How tours are picked
A tour appears here when it starts in Cairo, Giza, Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh and visits the places this guide covers. Duration, pick-up, what is included and who the tour is not suitable for are taken from the tour pages. Many tours around Giza stop at papyrus, perfume or alabaster shops, and reviewers often mention it; where that happens, the page says so, as it does for short camel rides, late pick-ups or tickets refused at a gate. When the booking platform stops listing a tour, it disappears from the site automatically.
How the site is paid for
Tour cards and comparison tables link to the booking platforms we work with. If you book through one of these links, we receive a commission and your price stays the same. Prices and ratings are loaded from the platform; we do not write or change them.
We are not a tour operator and do not take bookings. Questions about a booking go to the platform or to the operator named on it.
Photos
The photos come from Unsplash and Pexels. Most show the place named on the page. A few show a similar scene, such as a desert road elsewhere in Egypt, and their captions describe only what is in the picture.
