Day trips to the pyramids from Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh

Giza lies about 470 kilometres by road from Hurghada and more than 500 from Sharm el-Sheikh. A day trip is possible from both resorts, but by road it starts in the middle of the night, and a flight shortens the day by several hours.

By road, the Giza plateau is about 467 kilometres from Hurghada; route planners give five hours twenty minutes without a single stop. The tour operators reckon with about six hours each way. From Sharm el-Sheikh the distance is about 525 kilometres from the airport, and reviewers of the coach trip report nine to ten hours on the road. That explains the timetable: road trips from Hurghada collect guests from around 2am, the private car leaves at 3am, and the Sharm coach starts around midnight.

The programme in Cairo is similar on most trips: the plateau with the pyramids and the Sphinx, lunch, and a museum, usually the Grand Egyptian Museum. Some trips let you choose the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square or the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization with its mummy hall instead. What changes is how you get there and how many hours that costs.

By coach, van or private car

The big coach from Hurghada picks up guests from hotels all over town; the exact time is confirmed the day before. It visits the plateau and the Sphinx, stops for lunch and then the GEM or the mummy hall, with a short stop at a workshop. Including the drive, the day lasts about 24 hours. Reviewers praise the guides and describe the trip as worth the long drive, but mention late pickups, tight rows of seats, a perfume shop billed as a workshop and only two hours in the GEM. It is not suitable for wheelchair users or for people with claustrophobia, and guides in languages other than English need at least six guests.

The small-group trips use a minivan or van. One of them comes from a company whose vehicles carry the Nice Tours logo and adds a barbecue lunch and an optional boat on the Nile; pickups in Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Safaga and Soma Bay cost extra, and its packing list includes a credit card and a pillow. Another van trip takes about 20 hours and allows six hours for each leg.

The private car starts at 3am, stops briefly around 5.30am and reaches Cairo at about 8am. It drives a short loop through Old Cairo, then the Egyptian Museum, lunch, the pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple. All tickets listed in the programme are included, and the day takes 14 to 16 hours, the shortest by road. Pickup is also possible in El Gouna, Makadi Bay and Soma Bay.

The convoy and the long way home

Road trips do not always leave Cairo when the sightseeing ends. One trip from Hurghada states that all buses must wait at the end of the day for the convoy, and it fills the wait with a stop at a papyrus and oil shop. On the Sharm route, a reviewer in October 2026 described two hours sitting on the coach at a meeting point, waiting for a police convoy, before the trip got going. Other Sharm guests describe a change of bus around midnight and a round trip of 26 hours. Plan nothing early for the next morning.

Flying from Hurghada or Sharm

The flight trips pick you up at your hotel and fly to Cairo and back on the same day; most are listed at 16 to 18 hours door to door. The Hurghada day by air covers the pyramids, the Sphinx, lunch with a view of the pyramids and either the GEM or the old museum. Reviewers praise how the flights and transfers are organised. The complaints concern extras sold during the day, a 40-minute lunch break that felt too short, shop stops, and in one case a changed return flight without new tickets.

Another flight trip from Hurghada includes the domestic return flights, the Giza ticket, a museum of your choice, lunch and an English-speaking guide. Bring the ID you need for a domestic flight. The trip is non-refundable, and the operator says it is not suitable for elderly travellers or people with limited mobility. From Sharm el-Sheikh the flight trip visits the GEM or the older museum and the pyramids and takes 16 to 18 hours, against about 24 by coach.

How much time you get on site

The plateau and the museum share the hours between arrival and the drive home. One Hurghada trip that arrives at about 9.30am gives the GEM around two hours before the pyramids and lunch, and several reviewers wrote that two hours in the museum felt short. The GEM galleries open from 9am to 6pm on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and until 9pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

If one day in Cairo seems too rushed, a two-day trip from Hurghada adds a night in a private apartment with a view of the pyramids, which the operator stresses is not a hotel. The first day covers the plateau, the Sphinx and the GEM; on the second you can add the mummy hall, the Citadel or Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur.

Papers, safety and who should skip it

British travellers arriving at Sharm el-Sheikh can get a free entry stamp, but the UK Foreign Office says it only covers the nearby resorts. Check your visa before you book a day in Cairo. The same office advises against all travel to North Sinai and against all but essential travel to the northern part of South Sinai and other areas, and its list changes; read the current FCDO travel advice for Egypt or your own government's advice before travelling. It also reports sexual assaults in the Red Sea resorts, often by people the victim had met shortly before, such as hotel or excursion staff, and advises women travelling alone to take care in taxis at night. The tourist police number is 126.

Several trips are marked as unsuitable for people with limited mobility, some also during pregnancy or with heart problems, and the trip with the Great Pyramid option does not allow pushchairs. With small children, a day of 18 hours or more is hard going. For other ways to reach Cairo, see getting there.

What travellers say about the day trip to Cairo by plane from Hurghada

4.9 (4,445 reviews) · Reviews from GetYourGuide, shortened, names abbreviated

★★★★★ Dylan (United Kingdom) · October 2026

Could not recommend more. Had an amazing day which was action packed and interesting. Tour guide, Falcon, was very knowledgeable, helpful and organised throughout the trip.

★★★★★ Leonie (Germany) · October 2026 Translated

The Grand Egyptian Museum that followed was definitely worth the visit. The flight and the transport from the hotel and back were very well organised. Further activities are offered as well, for example an evening boat trip on the Nile, but that costs extra.

★★★★★ Martin (Austria) · October 2026 Translated

There was enough water for everyone (3 bottles of 0.6 l per person). The tour to the pyramids, the new museum and the final Nile cruise were also very interesting!

★★★★★ Rudolf (Switzerland) · February 2026 Translated

… 2. 40 minutes for lunch was far too short. It should be at least 1 hour. 3. At the souvenir stalls and at the camel riding/carriage rides he acted more as a "salesman" than as a guide …

★★★★★ Elveera (United States) · January 2026

… A significant amount of time was spent at papyrus and oil shops instead of sightseeing which were not part of the original advertised tour. Our return flight was changed, but we were not sent updated tickets …

Flights and hotel transfers are described as well organised, and low scores are rare. The complaints concern paid extras, a short lunch break and sales stops that were not in the programme.

Questions travellers ask

Is a day trip from Hurghada to the pyramids worth it?

It is a very long day, with pickup at about 2am or 3am by road and a return late at night. Reviews of the coach trips still rate the guides highly. Reviews mention about two hours in the museum and a short lunch break.

Should I take the bus or fly?

Most flight trips are listed at 16 to 18 hours door to door, the road trips from Hurghada at 14 to 24 hours. Flying saves several hours in a vehicle and the night-time pickup by road.

How long is the bus from Sharm el-Sheikh to Cairo?

Reviewers of the Sharm coach trip report 9 to 10 hours each way, plus waiting time. One guest counted 26 hours for the whole round trip.

Do I need a visa for a day trip from Sharm el-Sheikh?

The UK Foreign Office says the free entry stamp for British visitors arriving in Sharm el-Sheikh covers only the nearby resorts. Check your visa before you book a day in Cairo, and follow the advice of your own government.

Can I go inside a pyramid on these trips?

One trip from Hurghada offers the inside of the Great Pyramid as an option. On the others the pyramid interiors are not part of the programme.
