Book on GetYourGuideThe pyramids of Giza stand on a desert plateau on the western edge of Greater Cairo, about 15 km by road from the city centre. They are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, Memphis and its Necropolis, which runs from Giza to Saqqara and Dahshur and includes more than 38 pyramids. UNESCO calls the Great Pyramid the only surviving wonder of the ancient world. The plateau also holds the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure and the Great Sphinx.
Since April 2025 visitors enter the plateau through a new gate on the Cairo–Fayoum road, with a visitor centre and a car park; private cars no longer drive onto the site, and electric buses run between the stops. About 2 km away in a straight line, the Grand Egyptian Museum opened to the public on 4 November 2025 and sells timed tickets through its own shop.
South of Giza, Saqqara with the Step Pyramid of Djoser lies about 20 km away by road, and Dahshur with the Bent and Red Pyramids about 28 km. Heat shapes most plans: Cairo averages 19 to 25 °C from November to March and around 35 °C in midsummer, so the best time to visit is early in the day in any month.
